Da sind sie wieder die selbsternannten Wissenschaftler – und ja, in einer Branche, in der Bands regelmäßig kometenhaft auftauchen, um dann genauso schnell wieder zu verschwinden, haben We Are Scientists in aller Stille eine der bemerkenswertesten und beständigsten Karrieren im Alternative Rock hingelegt. Seit über zwei Jahrzehnten liefert die in New York ansässige Band – bestehend aus den Gründungsmitgliedern Keith Murray und Chris Cain – durchweg so scharfsinnigen wie einnehmenden Indie-Rock und hat dabei die seltene Fähigkeit bewahrt, sich weiterzuentwickeln, ohne ihre Identität zu verlieren. Und damit machen sie dieses Jahr weiter mit ihrem mittlerweile neunten Studioalbum Qualifying Miles, das am 18. Juli via Grönland Records erscheint!
Auf dem Album setzen Murray und Cain auf eine reduzierte „Band in einem Raum“-Ästhetik, die auf jene Musik zurückgreift, die bereits ihre Kindheit geprägt hat. Murray erklärt. „The crop songs we wrote for ‚Qualifying Miles‘ covered a huge range of genres, but somehow the songs that resonated the most with us all shared this vaguely 90s guitar rock sensibility.”
Obwohl Murray nicht mit einem thematischen Rahmen loszog, entdeckte er schnell einen roten Faden, der sich durch die neuen Songs zog: „It wasn’t until we’d chosen them and I started doing some lyrical touchups that I realized a lot these songs hit upon similar themes: wistfulness for the past, a sort of melancholy nostalgia, that kind of thing.”
Die aktuelle Single Please Don’t Say It stach von Anfang an heraus: “Chris heard it and immediately declared, ‘That’s a single’“, erinnert sich Keith. “It gave us a reason to see what else we had on hand. It’s a little bit like sculpting—you step back from this huge mass of songs and chip away until you see the album taking shape.” Zum Video sagen sie: „You know what we haven’t explored enough in our many years of video media creation? Fog. We’ve run rampant through city streets (Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt), rode horses across Irish bogs (Chick Lit), and had our eyes speared by nail guns (Dumb Luck). Somehow, though, the cinematographers of those videos never had the wherewithal to exploit the sex appeal of a good fog machine. Sure, yeah, we’ve had loads of haze (Your Heart Is A Weapon). Hell yes, we’ve deployed light steam (Rules Don’t Stop). But it took our many accrued years of cinematographic education to finally nail the fog layers sensual enough to convey the steamy carnality of this, the most sensually befogged song of We Are Scientists’ career. Please, now: get lost in the murk of ’Please Don’t Say It.’“
