Seit einigen Jahren schon verfolgen wir das zeitgeistige Treiben des mittlerweile 23-jährigen Londoners Matt Maltese, der mal mit großer Geste und ausladenden Produktionen, mal mit nahbarer Direktheit und einer extra Portion Humor die Banalität und die Einsamkeit des Lebens in den Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens stellt. Themen, die natürlich auch vor Corona allgegenwärtig waren, sich aber aktuell mehr denn je aufdrängen. Umso passender, dass heute die neue EP madhouse des Halb-Engländers und Halb-Kanadiers mit italienischen Wurzeln erscheint – und zwar als Debüt bei seinem neuen Label Nettwerk! Gleichzeitig erscheint auch das Video zum Titelsong, über den wir Maltese noch mal ausführlich gelöchert haben!

I wrote madhouse a little while back. I remember eating a bowl of cereal and thinking wow these cornflakes are putting me in a good mood, and that chorus kind of came into my head. It became this kind of cheerful ode to the emptiness and fulfillment that fills life, and how fragile the boundary between those two things can be. The attachment and detachment to life I feel I think comes pretty randomly, and that constant effort to find out where it’s coming from can be confusing.

With the video, Scarlett Carlos Clarke and I came up with an idea that could express that detachment and attachment. We decided to have me performing on a TV screen and then to try and magically come out the tv screen and perform an excruciatingly happy dance scene in the darkness. This was kind of aiming at expressing that thick mist of bewilderment with life I guess we can all feel and have to power through sometimes. I also feel like the TV was an effort to represent the sense of aloneness these confusions can bring.. but though it can often seem like you’re the only one who has these terrible, complex relationships to happiness, you’re not. And that’s a good thing.
