Spielen The Delines derzeit die schönste traurige Musik der Welt, den Soundtrack fürs Mitleiden in und an einer Gegenwart, in der Empathie zunehmend verloren geht? Das mag eine steile These sein (und natürlich eine sehr subjektive Einschätzung) – aber wenn man jetzt Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom hört, das offiziell vierte Studioalbum der fünfköpfigen Americana-Band aus Portland/Oregon, dann kommt man kaum drum herum, die atemberaubende, zu Herzen gehende und auf ihre Art tatsächlich einmalige Melancholie dieser Lieder zu spüren.
Dass „luck“ wie Glück hier kaum eine Rolle spielt, „doom“ wie Verhängnis oder Untergang dagegen eine große – es gehört einfach zur DNA der berührenden Songs des Empathikers Willy Vlautin (57) dazu, der auch früher schon als Frontmann der Folkrock-Band Richmond Fontaine und seit 2005 in mehrfach erfolgreich verfilmten Romanen wie The Motel Life, Lean On Pete oder The Horse die Kehrseite des American Dream ausleuchtete.
Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom wird, wie die kaum weniger herausragenden Album-Vorgänger The Imperial (2019) und The Sea Drift (2022), geprägt von Vlautins Songwriting und Gitarrenspiel, einer fest etablierten Kern-Band (Cory Gray an Keyboards/Trompete, Fred Trujillo am Bass, Sean Oldham am Schlagzeug, Studio-As John Morgan Askew für Produktion und Arrangements) – und einer fabelhaften Lead-Stimme voller Reife und Wärme, irgendwo zwischen Dusty Springfield, Bobbie Gentry und Karen Carpenter. Sängerin Amy Boone ist sogar der Hauptgrund, warum es The Delines gibt.
Und das kam so, wie Willy Vlautin im Bedroomdisco-Interview erzählt: „I always struggled being a frontman. I loved being in Richmond Fontaine, it was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me, but I don’t think I was ever meant to do it and in the end I don’t think I was that great at it. I always wanted to be in a band like The Delines. Women singers have always been my favorite and when I heard Amy sing I was like, ‚I want to grow old in a band where she sings all the songs‘. The Delines started as an experiment (…). And we got lucky. People liked it and we loved it.“
Dass Amy Boone seit dem Delines-Debüt Colfax (2014) stets Lieder mit niederschmetternden Texten singen muss – daran hat sich auch bei Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom nichts geändert. Oder besser gesagt: fast nichts. Denn für das Titelstück intervenierte die Frontfrau mit den Worten: „Look, I’m just a normal girl. Can’t we have a song where the guy gets the girl and they fall for once?“ Und Willy Vlautin tat ihr den Gefallen, einen „rare happily ever after love song“ zu schreiben. Boone hat sich darüber gefreut: „I love singing sad songs, especially sad songs with interesting characters“, sagt sie im Interview. „It is nice though to have a break from the heavy themes that run through most of these songs. The romantic side of me wants a happy ending once in a while.“
Die anderen zehn Lieder – von Her Ponyboy (Vlautin: „The most romantic and tragic song on the record“) über The Haunting Thoughts („About a woman who can’t shake the fear that the world she’s in is going to collapse“) bis JP And Me („The tale of a grifter couple on the run“) – sind dagegen wieder tendenziell düster. Es ist gewiss kein Zufall, dass das Songwriting und die Bücher von Willy Vlautin mit Bruce Springsteens pessimistischen Nebraska-Aufnahmen und erschütternden Romanen von John Steinbeck (vor allem dem Great-Depression-Epos Früchte des Zorns) verglichen werden. Dieser Autor schaut genau hin, er kennt die Schicksale der Verlierer und Underdogs in den USA, jeder Song ist hier eine in prachtvolle Melodien verpackte, lakonische Short-Story.
Damit zur Musik – denn die macht es zum Glück sehr leicht, die möglicherweise deprimierenden Lyrics heil zu überstehen. Meist werden The Delines als Country-Soul-Band bezeichnet – wobei „Country“ bei Vlautin, Boone & Co. mit Nashville-C&W natürlich gar nichts zu tun hat und „Soul“ mit modernem R&B ebenso wenig. Es ist ein Stil-Mix, der sich eher auf den Latenight-Jazz eines Chet Baker, auf Southern Soul und Seventies-Folkpop bezieht.
Willy Vlautin beschreibt den Sound seiner Band so: „There’s so many influences going around in the Delines. Cory is a great jazz musician, Sean grew up playing jazz, and Freddy is a serious soul and blues and rock bass player. He’s my favorite bass player in town. The talent of those three guys is unreal. So much of the time Amy and I can’t believe we get to play with them. And I bring in a mood, a song with a world and a story, and Amy brings in the soul. We all love American music: country, R&B, and jazz. You just throw all our loves into a blender with a bit of age and tequila, failures and heartbreaks and minor triumphs, and you have The Delines.“
„Failures and heartbreaks and minor triumphs“ also, zum Niederknien schön inszeniert mit feinsten Zutaten aus der nordamerikanischen Musikgeschichte: Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom wird niemanden, der dafür irgendwie empfänglich ist, kalt lassen. Schon jetzt eines der besten Alben des Jahres.
