Michelle Zauner alias Japanese Breakfast kündigte zuletzt nicht nur mit Jubilee den Nachfolger zum hochgelobten 2017er Album Soft Sounds From Another Planet für den 4. Juni via Dead Oceans an, nein sie rief gleichzeitig auch noch das Ende des Kummers in ihren Texten aus! Zauner erklärt: „After spending the last five years writing about grief, I wanted our follow up to be about joy. For me, a third record should feel bombastic and so I wanted to pull out all the stops for this one.“ Doch so ganz ohne tiefsinnige Melancholie kann sie eben doch nicht, wie man beim letzten Vorboten Posing in Bondage erfuhr– einer Ballade über Einsamkeit und Sehnsucht, die von zwei Menschen erzählt, die trotz aller Mühe und Willen es nicht schaffen, eine Verbindung untereinander aufzubauen.

Die nächste Single Savage Good Boy ist da schon etwas Augenzwinkernder: “Savage Good Boy came from a headline I read about billionaires buying bunkers. I was interested in examining that specific type of villainy, and I found myself adopting the perspective of a rich man coaxing a young woman to come live with him underground, attempting to rationalize his almost impossible share of greed and miserliness,” verrät Zauner.  “I knew I wanted the music video to be a pretty literal interpretation of that idea. I wanted to juxtapose images of this post-apocalyptic, industrial bunker with the lightness and extravagance of rococo fashion and set design. Aiming for that balance, my cinematographer, Adam Kolodny, and I were really inspired by Chan Wook Park’s The Handmaiden, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Sally Potter’s Orlando.”

Wie schon zuletzt führt Zauner auch bei der neuen Single selbst Regie und gibt auch eine der beiden Hauptrollen – die zweite übernimmt niemand geringeres als Michael Imperioli, bekannt aus der Kultserie Die Sopranos. Darin trifft die post-apokalyptischen Szenerie eines industriellen Bunker auf die Leichtigkeit und Extravaganz des Rokoko-Modestils und ein prachtvolles Filmset-Design.
